A senior administration official has unintentionally leaked information regarding plans to send an elite army unit to Portland, marking the most recent in a string of information leaks attributed to the present government.

Encrypted Communications Uncover Assignment Conversations

Anthony Salisbury, a top aide to influential White House strategist Stephen Miller, was seen utilizing the Signal application in a public place to talk about a plan to deploy the military's 82nd airborne division to Portland, the Democratic-run Oregon city which was frequently castigated by former president as described as “war-ravaged.”

Screenshots of Salisbury’s encrypted communications were obtained by a news outlet, which reported they were sent while the staffer was “in plain sight of others” in Minnesota.

“Between you and I, I think the defense secretary just wants the political protection from the boss if anything goes wrong with the soldiers there,” a communication read.

Defense Secretary Wants Presidential Authorization

In the communications, sent last weekend, Salisbury chatted with Patrick Weaver, a senior adviser to the US defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, and additional high-ranking government figures.

Weaver stated that Hegseth desired Trump to explicitly tell him to send military personnel to Portland.

He added that Hegseth would prefer to send in the state militia due to potential public reaction over employing the army.

“82nd is like our premier rapid response unit for overseas. So it will cause a lot of headlines,” he added. “Probably why he wants the president to tell him to do it.”

Specialized Division History

The elite parachute unit is a highly trained military unit which focuses in airborne operations and rapid deployment missions. It was utilized in World War I and II and the conflicts in Vietnam and Central Asia. Its commander was the last U.S. troop to pull out from Afghanistan in 2021.

On the weekend, Hegseth announced 200 personnel of the national guard would be sent “right away.” On Wednesday, Trump claimed the national guard was “now in place”; however, a regional media affiliate reported that the guard had still not been dispatched.

Administration Statement

In a statement to the news outlet, a administration representative confirmed Salisbury had been in Minnesota to be present at a funeral.

“Despite experiencing sorrow from the passing of a family member, Tony continued his important work on behalf of the American people,” the spokesperson stated. “Nothing in these confidential discussions, that are shamefully being reported on by unethical journalists, is new or classified information.”

Prior Administration Leaks

The messages constitute the latest awkward disclosure associated with the government. In spring, the editor-in-chief of a major publication was accidentally included to a encrypted group that was being used by high-level government figures, including Hegseth and the second-in-command, to discuss confidential armed attacks on a Middle Eastern nation.

A month it emerged that Hegseth had used a second encrypted messaging group to transmit specific information about the attacks to his spouse, his brother and about a twelve other individuals.
