Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
