American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, leading airports to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated travel would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an mean of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the authority said DFW, the second most active airfield in the country, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.
