New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
