Putin Vows Steady Energy Deliveries to India in Defiance of US Demands
In a clear statement to the West, President Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to guarantee “unbroken” shipments of energy resources to India. The announcement came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and asserted their bilateral ties were “immune to outside influence.”
A Signal Directed at the United States
The statement, made on Friday, seemed to be targeted at Washington, who have tried to compel New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding links with Moscow. The context follows earlier Washington's moves, notably the introduction of tariffs on India due to its purchase of Russian oil.
“Our nation is a dependable supplier of oil and gas and all needed for the advancement of India’s economy,” Putin said. “Moscow stands willing to persist in guaranteeing the uninterrupted delivery of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”
Prime Minister Modi, though he did not referencing crude directly, supported the theme by stating that “secure fuel supplies has been a key and vital foundation of the Indo-Russian alliance.”
Challenging US Interference
In the lead-up to the talks, via a TV appearance, Putin had criticized Washington's stance over India's energy purchases. Putin stated, “When Washington is entitled to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India enjoy the same privilege?”
Putin's arrival represented his maiden trip to India after the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a clear attempt to display that the personal rapport between the men persisted strongly.
A Warm Greeting
In a notable gesture, the Indian PM met Putin as he disembarked. The two embraced warmly as old friends before having a private dinner together.
The Indian prime minister later described India's relationship with Russia as “a lodestar” and said it was “built on mutual respect and profound confidence.”
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The meeting produced multiple significant pacts in the fields of military and trade relations. One significant result was the completion of an joint economic plan extending until 2030, which aims to boost commerce to a hundred billion USD annually by the target year.
Additionally vowed to recalibrate their military partnership. While Russia continues to be India's largest source of arms, this role has reduced over the past decade as India works to diversify its supply base.
The official release emphasized an agreement on the joint production of advanced defence platforms, although direct reference of deals for the Su-57 fighter jet were left out.
Overall, Moscow and Delhi affirmed that during the “current complex, tense, and volatile geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties remain durable to external pressure.”
